Alliance4XR: The Commitment to an Open, Inclusive XR Platform for Technical Education in Europe

At EuroXR, we believe Extended Reality (XR) should be accessible to everyone, not just to those with the latest hardware or deep technical knowledge. That’s why we’re proud to be a partner in Alliance4XR, an Erasmus+ project co-funded by the European Union, which is building an inclusive, browser-based XR platform designed to support education, training, and collaboration across Europe.

Why Alliance4XR Matters

Alliance4XR isn’t just about technology, it’s about empowering educational institutions and vocational training centres (HEIs and VETs) with the tools and methodologies they need to bring XR into the classroom in a meaningful way. The project is especially focused on engineering disciplines, such as structural engineering, energy, and maritime.

By developing tailored teaching and training materials, the project team is helping institutions better prepare students and trainees for the real demands of the XR job market, and tackle the growing skills gap in immersive technologies.

Making XR More Accessible With WebXR

One of the key innovations of the Alliance4XR platform is its use of WebXR technologies like Babylon.js and Papillon, to make XR experiences available directly in a web browser. That means:

  • No need for heavy installations.

  • No dependency on expensive or proprietary hardware.

  • A fallback 3D version for users whose devices don’t support WebXR.

While some older or closed systems still remain incompatible, the development team is actively tracking this as part of the project, aiming to identify gaps and explore alternatives, such as legacy WebVR support.

What the Platform Offers

The platform is designed as a collaborative space, with features that support:

  • Online conferencing for project teams.

  • Creation, editing, and distribution of interactive 3D XR scenes, with physics, animations, and advanced functions.

  • An advanced scene editor for expert users, and a wizard-style tool in development to support educators and non-technical users.

Users can run experiences in full immersive mode (e.g., on Oculus Quest 3) or view them in augmented reality via compatible devices. A future open-source viewer will further expand access and reuse.

Inclusion by Design

From the start, Alliance4XR has put accessibility at the core of its development. The platform is being designed to:

  • Support users with disabilities.

  • Provide inclusive interaction models across hardware types.

  • Explore options for older devices to ensure nobody is excluded from the XR learning experience.

What’s Next

Currently, the team is working to expand the platform with a rich library of XR experiences across engineering domains. Data is also being collected to better understand how to serve those using older or less compatible headsets.

At EuroXR, Alliance4XR is seen as more than just a technical project, it represents a broader mission to connect the XR community in Europe, and ensure that immersive technologies are a tool for education, collaboration, and empowerment.
